Resources You Should Use at the University of Alabama

Denny Chimes Tower

College can feel overwhelming at times, but you don’t have to figure it all out on your own. Whether you need academic help, mental health support, career guidance, or just a quiet place to recharge, the University of Alabama offers a ton of resources designed to help you succeed. The trick is just knowing they exist—and actually taking advantage of them.

Here’s a breakdown of some of the most helpful resources on campus that every Bama student should know about:

Academic Resources

1. Capstone Center for Student Success (CCSS)

Located in Russell Hall, CCSS offers free tutoring, study help, and academic coaching for students in almost every subject. You can also meet with a learning specialist to build better study habits or time management skills.

2. Writing Center

Need help starting a paper or fine-tuning a final draft? The Writing Center (in Lloyd Hall) offers one-on-one sessions with trained writing tutors—no judgment, just support.

3. Math Technology Learning Center (MTLC)

For anyone taking lower-level math classes, the MTLC is where you’ll take tests and get math help. They have walk-in hours and tutors who can guide you through those confusing algebra problems.

4. Libraries & Study Spaces

Gorgas Library is the go-to, but there are also libraries for business, engineering, and more. Bonus: Gorgas has individual study rooms you can reserve online.

Wellness & Mental Health

5. Counseling Center

Located on the 3rd floor of the South Lawn Office Building, the UA Counseling Center offers free individual counseling, group therapy, and stress management workshops for all enrolled students.

6. Student Health Center

From routine appointments to vaccinations and urgent care, the SHC has you covered. They also offer mental health medication consults and referrals if needed.

7. Women and Gender Resource Center

This office provides support services related to gender equity and personal safety, including free counseling and advocacy for survivors of interpersonal violence.

8. Student Recreation Center

Not just a gym—the Rec offers fitness classes, nutrition advice, wellness coaching, and outdoor adventure trips. It’s a great way to reset both mentally and physically.

Career & Professional Development

9. Career Center

Located in the Student Center, the Career Center helps with everything from writing a resume to preparing for interviews. You can also schedule career coaching sessions or attend their career fairs and networking events.

10. Handshake

UA uses Handshake to post job openings, internships, and events. Set up your profile early and keep an eye out for career-related opportunities.

Campus Life & Involvement

11. The SOURCE

The best place to find student orgs that match your interests. Whether you’re into service, politics, creative arts, or cultural communities, The SOURCE has hundreds of clubs you can join.

12. University Programs & Week of Welcome (WOW)

UP hosts free student events throughout the year—think movie nights, trivia, giveaways, and food trucks. Week of Welcome is especially packed with fun, so don’t skip it.

13. Off-Campus Resources

UA helps students living off-campus through off-campus resources, which provide tenant tips, roommate advice, and safety guidance for apartment life in Tuscaloosa. As a friend of UA, we at ApartmentsForLegends also help students find off-campus apartments near University of Alabama

There’s no award for doing college alone—so use the resources that are literally here to help you. Whether you’re hitting an academic wall, stressed out before finals, or just want to make a new friend or find your next internship, UA has something for you.

Ask questions. Show up. Try new things. And Roll Tide.
