As a college student, it is essential to find study spots that work for you as this could determine how successful you are academically. Although you may be tempted to just work inside your UA off-campus housing, there are many other options to choose from depending on the specific location you are looking for. Whether your preferred studying style is in a quiet space by yourself or a group collaboration in a sociable environment, the University of Alabama is sure to have a place for you. As a student, I have worked in numerous study locations outside of my apartment near UA during my time here on campus, but a handful stand out that I would be eager to recommend to others which I will now share below.
Gorgas Library is the main and most popular library on campus as it is located directly behind the quad opposite of Denny Chimes. This 6-floor library has anything that a student could need including printers, computer access, study rooms, and even a coffee shop. The first and second floor is where people often study with friends or in groups using the study rooms and common areas. As you go up in floors, the required level of silence rises, making floor 6 completely silent with all cell phones turned off and no sound-producing activities, group study, or conversations. Gorgas stays open until 2 am on weekdays to make sure you can always get some last-minute studying in as well as staying open 24-hours during final exams.
The Quad
The Quad is the field located in between Denny Chimes and Gorgas Library, making it a central part of campus. Students use the quad daily whether it is to walk to class, spend time enjoying the weather, play games with their friends, or get schoolwork done. Students fill the lawn chairs or bring their own towels to study while spending refreshing time outside before attending their classes. Food trucks also line up alongside the quad, making it easy for students to get a quick meal. While being on the quad, you are able to see everything that makes up UA as the campus truly comes together.
Heritage House is a local coffee shop in Tuscaloosa and due to its enormous popularity, it has opened two additional locations close to the university. Heritage House was the first coffee shop to open in town, and since opening in 1993, none of the character or charm of the shop has changed. These shops are filled with antique furniture, study spaces for students, and a large menu of food and beverages that keep students coming back. Students can often find themselves working all day at one of Heritage's locations as the atmosphere there helps them stay focused and satisfied. Make sure to try one of their baked oatmeal or specialty lattes!
The Student Center is considered the heart of UA's campus as it has something for every student there. It is home to the Mail Center, Crimson Copies, University Supply Store, a variety of dining options, and numerous study spaces to choose from. Since most students visit the center on a weekly basis, it is frequently used as a gathering place for group projects. It is a very social setting, so if you don't function well in a noisy environment, visit the center earlier in the day when fewer people are present.
